Head Coach Mark Gray
Mark joined SYAC in the January of 2003. Previous to working with SYAC Mark coached for Pirates and has been coaching competitive swimmers for over twenty-four years. Mark is a level 4 certified coach through the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA). Mark has coached a variety of swimmers from developmental to National level. In addition, Mark along with Trent, Amy and Cathy Philpot has lead the East High Girl’s swim team to two consecutive state championships. Mark participates in coaching all groups, but is currently focusing on the SUN FISH (Silver Group) and the Devils (Gold/Senior/High School) group.
Coach Amy Barefield
This is Amy’s second year coaching at SYAC. She came to Utah from Montana in the fall of 2002 to compete for the University of Utah’s women’s swimming team, specializing in free style. Following graduation from the University of Utah, Amy has gained coaching experience over the last couple of years by working with summer league teams, and helping out at the 2004 Nike swim camp. She believes that everyone can gain something from participating in the sport of swimming. Amy primarily coaches the Thresher (Bronze) Group. She has a very active group that is improving very well. She is excited that her group has enlarged and is very active in meet attendance.
Coach Cynthia Phillips
This is Coach Cynthia’s second full season coaching SYAC SEA STARS, however she is not new to swimming or coaching. She writes "I would like the kids I coach to love the feeling of gliding through the water as much as I do. I started teaching swimming at 10 years old, and have been teaching on and off since then. I enjoy working to improve the strokes of the newer members of the swim team. I have been coaching with SYAC since 2009. My favorite race is a 3000 meter open water swim, especially one with lots of seaweed."
